Italian Shogi Association
The Italian Shogi Association (AIS) was established in Milan on December 4, 1999, at the initiative of researcher Marco Durante. Marco Durante was elected as the first President of AIS.
The idea to found AIS originated in Japan, where Marco Durante participated in the first International Shogi Forum (ISF) in Tokyo in 1999. Encouraged by the organizers to promote Shogi in a structured way in Italy, he began searching for players interested in the Japanese variant of chess within chess and gaming clubs.
Through the internal magazine of the Italian Association of Heterodox Chess (AISE), he published the history of Shogi and announced the founding of AIS.
During the 1999 “Giochi Sforzeschi” in Milan, the founding group of AIS (Marco Durante, Pieter Stouten, Giuseppe Baggio, Cristiano Garbarini, Enrico Tognoni, and Luca Cerrato) declared the association’s mission, summarized as: “to promote Shogi and Japanese culture throughout Italy.”
The Italian Shogi Association was immediately recognized internationally as the official reference for Italy by the Nihon Shōgi Renmei (日本将棋連盟) and the Federation of European Shogi Associations (FESA).
The International Shogi Forum officially recognized the Italian Shogi Association from its inception as the organizer of qualification and selection tournaments for Italian participants in the ISF.
Since 1999, the Italian Shogi Association has organized the only in-person Italian Shogi Championship.
The Italian Shogi Championship awards two winners: one for the Overall Ranking and one for the Italian Title. Over the years, the Italian Shogi Championship has involved players of numerous nationalities, including Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, England, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
