Shogi board
The shogi board consists of 81 squares: nine rows by nine columns.
All squares have the same color and are bordered by lines only.
The reference system originates from the top right corner. Columns are numbered from right to left using “Western” numbers. Rows are numbered from top to bottom using Japanese numbers.
Each square has two coordinates: the column number and the row number.
Players place their twenty pieces in the first three rows in front of them.
Players can promote their pieces in the three opposite rows.
The promotion rules will be explained later.
